AI algorithms are easy. Business value transformation is harder

Algorithms are often the first thing that comes to mind when mentioning AI. While they're a vital part of the equation, they're not the hardest part. Building an algorithm is relatively straightforward today, with readily available off-the-shelf solutions and tools. The real challenge - and opportunity - lies in everything that surrounds the algorithm: the data, the systems, and the cultural shift needed to fully realize AI's potential.

For loyalty in the travel industry, AI presents an unprecedented opportunity to reimagine customer engagement. But, success depends on a broader vision of what AI can do and a readiness to embrace the changes it demands.

The ecosystem around AI: where the real work begins

AI's power comes from how it's applied, which depends on the ecosystem supporting it. Several focus areas must be considered for AI to truly become a transformative force for loyalty programs:

  1. Data that works for you
Loyalty programs are brimming with data - customer preferences, transaction histories, and behavioral insights. However, much of this data is siloed or inconsistent, limiting its usefulness. For AI to work effectively, this data must be unified and accessible, enabling it to power personalized and predictive customer experiences.
  2. Modernizing legacy systems
Legacy technology permeates the travel industry, upon which countless critical systems are built. The problem? These outdated systems weren´t designed to handle AI´s demands. Modern platforms that integrate seamlessly with both old and new systems are essential for making AI-driven insights actionable.
  3. The "Black Box" problem
One of the challenges with AI, particularly in customer-facing loyalty applications, is its lack of explainability. AI often operates as a "black box," making decisions that may be highly effective but difficult to explain to customers or even internal stakeholders. For loyalty programs to maintain trust, brands need to strike a balance between the power of AI for personalized offers while ensuring transparency about how and why decisions are made. This can involve clearly explaining recommendations or using AI selectively in scenarios where clarity is essential.
  4. A culture of change
Adopting AI isn't just about technology; it's about people. AI shifts how decisions are made, how teams operate, and how value is delivered to customers. Success requires organizations to embrace change, invest in reskilling teams, and align their strategies and organizations with AI's capabilities.

Data as the core driver of loyalty innovation

In today's world, data isn't just a tool; it's a game-changer. Much like oil, data can be valuable in its raw form but becomes transformative when refined into actionable insights. But it isn´t just about enhancing customer experiences or driving revenues; it´s about opening the floodgates to new value creation.

  • Enhancing external propositions:AI-driven insights help refine offerings across partner networks, creating tailored propositions that broaden stakeholder engagement and value delivery at scale.
  • Optimizing internal processes: From dynamic pricing strategies to personalized retail, AI-driven insights help streamline operations, improving efficiency and simplifying customer interactions.
  • From insights to revenue: Sourcing and managing large data volumes to train AI algorithms can become a business opportunity in itself. In this way, data shifts from being a passive asset to an active driver of innovation, like AI-based fraud detection, enabling brands to thrive in an increasingly competitive market.
  • Enabling new loyalty models: Loyalty isn´t just about points anymore; it´s about lifestyle-focused rewards, subscription models, and engagement strategies that resonate with modern travelers. AI enables faster, multidimensional analysis of large data sets, enabling real-time engagement and value creation through dynamic rewards, gamified challenges, and timely incentives. These innovative loyalty models nurture deeper customer connections and long-term retention.

AI as an enabler of transformation

AI isn't the end goal - it's the enabler that offers loyalty programs a way to break free from traditional models and build experiences that resonate deeply with customers. By coupling the strategic use of data with advanced AI capabilities, loyalty programs can transform into customer delight engines with real bottom-line impact.

Addressing the ecosystem challenges around data integrity, legacy tech, transparency, and cultural change is key to turning AI from a buzzword into a strategic advantage.

The question isn't whether AI can transform loyalty - it's whether we're ready and have the modern technology required to embrace the opportunities AI brings.
