Addressing cruise line needs for modern onboard solutions that drive guest satisfaction and optimize operations

TCS onboard systems Blog

Managing a portfolio of onboard products for cruise lines requires a strategic approach that ensures each solution serves its purpose and augments value by integrating seamlessly with others. A successful portfolio aligns business objectives with the needs of end users and guests, driving innovation, profitability, and efficiency.

At IBS Software, three key themes guide our portfolio management philosophy for our modern onboard products so that cruise lines can meet the expectations of their guests and employees.

1. Guest-centricity

Many software providers emphasize the importance of the guest experience, but how does that break down into tangible functionality that enhances service interactions? Most onboard systems allow users to record important guest information, like extra pillow requests. However, this information is often buried within the system, requiring reports to be run, spreadsheets to be printed, and housekeeping staff to sift through the data to figure out what's relevant to them. A more effective approach integrates guest preferences directly into operational processes.

Consider a scenario where housekeeping staff receive real-time notifications about guest requests as they enter a cabin. Instead of sifting through printed sheets, they can instantly see important details like special requirements or birthdays on a handheld device, enabling personalized service. Streamlining these interactions ensures crew members can focus on delivering thoughtful, high-quality guest experiences without inefficient administrative steps.

2. Crew mobility

While fixed, PC-based workstations served their purpose, they now belong in a museum. Mobile devices allow crew members to focus on guests "in the moment" rather than stepping away to check a computer or consult paperwork.Consider a waiter in one of the cruise ship´s restaurants juggling multiple responsibilities, from managing orders at different stages of the dining experience to processing payments. Traditional workflows require repeated trips to a point-of-sale terminal, adding unnecessary steps and reducing service efficiency. A mobile-enabled solution allows orders to be transmitted instantly to the kitchen, notifies waiters when food is ready, and even processes payments at the table. Additionally, guest profile data can provide allergy alerts and personalized recommendations, ensuring a smooth and customized dining experience.

Mobile solutions enhance service delivery, minimize errors, and create a more seamless operational flow by reducing the need for crew members to step away from guest interactions.

3. Efficiency

Efficiency plays a critical role in shaping guest perceptions and optimizing onboard operations. For example, guests expect a swift and intuitive process when booking a shore excursion. They don't want to spend their time waiting while a crew member navigates through a series of complicated workflows, repetitive tasks, and countless clicks. An overly complex workflow leads to frustration and operational bottlenecks. Simplifying processes enhances both crew productivity and guest satisfaction. A well-designed system allows crew members to quickly access guest preferences, suggest relevant excursions, and complete bookings in just a few clicks. Empowering guests to manage bookings through self-service touchpoints, such as in-room TVs and guest mobile apps, adds flexibility and further streamlines operations.

In fast-paced environments like cruise ships, every second counts, and optimizing routine interactions can significantly impact overall service quality.
